Undateable Black Atheist
-
This upsets me on several levels and mostly because it’s not far from how a real black family would react to someone they love dating an atheist. From the Friendly Atheist website:
“There’s a show called “Belle’s” on TV One, a network geared toward African-American viewers. (We can add both of those to the List of Things I Learned Existed About Four Seconds Ago.)
On the most recent episode, Jil Cooper introduced her boyfriend Jack to her family. (Get it? Jack and Jil!) Just one problem: Jack is an atheist — something even Jil didn’t know about — and father Big Bill Cooper can’t deal with it.
(Neither can the show’s staff, apparently. A description of the episode reads: “Jill meets the perfect guy and invites him to dinner for an introduction to Bill and the family. His imperfection is revealed and Jill has to decide whether or not to continue dating him.”)”

Sadly, I suspect there are still quite a few families that would regard dating an atheist as unacceptable. This particular form of bigotry appears to be socially acceptable in a way few others are.

I wouldn’t be surprised because of personal experience. I’m a atheist but most women look at that as an “Deal Breaker”
While the treatment of the atheist (as well as some of the acting and writing) are objectionable, I’m actually really impressed that the situation exists in a (relatively) mainstream show. And I love Keith David!
I agree with Anton. The important part is at least they’re having the conversation. Avoiding these types of issues for fears of being PC-trolled is what prevents many ppl from realizing there’re 2 sides to consider.

Many are unaware they regularly share space with atheists as many choose not to reveal that portion of their lives. Interestingly, religion seem female driven in the black community and attendance figures bear that out. Men are noticeably absent from religious roles. With the huge gap between belief and behavior, many Christians are de facto heathens.
